FERTILITY AND INFERTILITY
Q&A With Specialist Dr. Alice Domar

Dr. Domar explains basic factors affecting fertility.

Q: Is it true that hormonal problems are the most common reason why women who are attempting to get pregnant have difficulty conceiving?

A: Hormonal issues actually are the most common reason why women have a difficult time getting pregnant. What you might not know however is that stress — including stress about conception — can have an impact on your hormone levels and can play a part in your ability to conceive through other means as well. If you are stressed out you may not be in the mood for intercourse and we all know that to get pregnant intercourse does need to happen. High levels of stress can also make you engage in behaviors, such as increasing alcohol consumption or smoking more cigarettes, which will reduce your fertility. Try talking with your healthcare professional for direction on how to reduce the stress in your life to make getting pregnant a little easier.

Q: I've heard that acupuncture can increase my chances to get pregnant, is this true?

A: It has been believed for many years that acupuncture can have positive results in getting a woman pregnant. This ancient Chinese medicine has been known to positively affect both mental and physical changes in the body. There is not any definitive research yet though. If this is an approach which is of interest to you, speak with your healthcare professional for more information on how acupuncture might improve your odds of getting pregnant. Be cautious about herbs however; there is evidence that herbs can actually decrease the chance of conception.

Q: While planning for pregnancy and once pregnant I know I'm supposed to wean myself from caffeine and completely cut out smoking and drinking alcohol. Is this really necessary?

A: Yes, research has proven there is a direct link between these unhealthy habits and a woman's ability to get and stay pregnant. To ensure a health pregnancy for you and your baby, be sure to eliminate these habits. We all try to be as health conscious as we can, but with pregnancy on your mind, a healthy lifestyle is even more important. In addition, talk to your healthcare professional for a recommendation for a high quality prenatal vitamin.

Q: I'm about 20 pounds overweight and want to start a diet and exercise regimen in anticipating getting pregnant. How should I lose the weight safely?

A: It's good that you're taking the steps to lose the extra weight in planning for pregnancy, but you don't want to start a diet program to lose too much weight over a short period of time. This can affect your reproductive cycle and delay getting pregnant. Instead, establish a weight loss program through a moderate exercise program and a gradual reduction in calories. Not only will this increase your chances of getting pregnant but if you stick with your plan throughout your pregnancy you'll also benefit. Exercise helps to strengthen muscles needed during pregnancy and delivery by improving circulation, relieving common aches and pains, and controlling weight gain. Speak to your healthcare professional for the best way to address your weight.
