Am I Ready to Get Pregnant? How to Decide.

Deciding to begin trying to conceive is one of the biggest and most exciting choices you’ll ever make. That’s why you should give it plenty of thought before you begin. From the practical to the emotional, you have quite a lot to consider when making your decision.

You may want to start by asking yourself a few questions about your practical and financial situation:

  • Do you have health insurance that will cover the majority of the pregnancy and post-partum visits?
  • Does your employer offer maternity benefits, and if so, will those benefits cover your needs after the baby is born?
  • Will you return to work after the baby is born? If so, what is your childcare plan. Does it fit within your budget?
  • Does your current living situation offer enough space and comfort for a growing family? If not, are you able to make a change?
  • Can you absorb the extra expenses that come with a baby?

If your answers to the above questions leave you feeling prepared, you can begin to ask yourself more personal questions about your health:

  • Do you have an OB/GYN you like and trust, and with whom you can begin to plan your pregnancy?
  • Do you suffer from any chronic physical or mental health conditions that need to be managed during pregnancy – anything from anxiety to diabetes?
  • Are you in good physical health overall?
  • Are you prepared to change some habits before you conceive, that will make your body a healthier home for baby? For instance, are you ready to cutback on your alcohol consumption? Are you ready to maintain a healthy diet? Can you make time for the extra rest you’ll need once you’re pregnant?
  • And, finally, are you and your partner ready to work as a team–while you’re trying to conceive, once you’re pregnant, and after baby is born? You’ll each need support, and making sure your lines of communication are open and honest is key.

Feeling as ready as you’ll ever be? Terrific. Make an appointment with your OB/GYN and begin talking to her about your plans. She’ll give you the guidance and support you need to begin raising your family.
