When to Take a Digital Pregnancy Test

Early pregnancy detection matters. The first few weeks of pregnancy are critical to fetal development, and early prenatal care is important for a healthy birth weight and the baby’s survival. The sooner you know you’re pregnant, the sooner you can begin making healthy pregnancy choices for yourself and your baby, such as diet, nutrition, vitamin supplements and limiting your exposure to hazards. An accurate and easy-to-use, home pregnancy test like FIRST RESPONSE makes it even easier for you to know when you’re pregnant and begin your pregnancy journey even earlier.

Things to Know About Testing Early…

Some pregnant women may not have detectable amounts of the pregnancy hormone in their urine on the day they use the test. The amount of pregnancy hormone increases as the pregnancy progresses.

In laboratory testing, FIRST RESPONSE™ Digital Pregnancy Test detected the pregnancy hormone levels in the urine of 60% of pregnant women 5 days before their expected period; in 86% of pregnant women 4 days before their expected period; in 96% of pregnant women 3 days before their expected period; in >99% of pregnant women 2 days before their expected period; in >99% of pregnant women 1 day before their expected period; and in >99% of pregnant women on the day of their expected period.

How to Use a Digital Pregnancy Test

Read the full digital pregnancy test instructions before taking test, click here . Then, remove the test stick from wrapper and take off the Overcap. Check the Display Screen for a steady clock symbol. Do not use unless the clock symbol is showing.

IMPORTANT NOTE: DO NOT OPEN WRAPPER UNTIL READY TO USE. THIS DEVICE SELF-ACTIVATES WHEN THE WRAPPER IS OPENED. WITH THE WRAPPER REMOVED, YOU SHOULD SEE A STEADY CLOCK SYMBOL ON THE DISPLAY SCREEN. IF SO, THEN THE DEVICE IS READY FOR USE.

Digital Pregnancy Test Instructions

Hold the test stick by Thumb Grip, with the Absorbent Tip pointed down, and the Result Window facing away from your body. Place the Absorbent Tip into your urine stream for 5 seconds only.

Alternatively, collect urine in a clean, dry cup. Dip the entire Wide Absorbent Tip into urine for 5 seconds only.

How to Read Your Urine Pregnancy Test Result

After the test stick has been in contact with the urine for 5 seconds, hold the test stick with Absorbent Tip pointed down and put the Overcap back on. Place stick on a flat, dry surface with the Result Window facing up.

The clock symbol will begin to blink about 30 seconds after urine is applied. This means the test is working.

After about 3 minutes, an unmistakable “YES+” or “NO-” appears on the Display Screen. If a "?" appears or the screen goes blank, an error as occurred. Retest using another FIRST RESPONSE™ Digital Pregnancy Test, carefully following all instructions.

PREGNANT:

“YES+” shows on the Display Screen. This means that test detected the pregnancy hormone (hCG) in your urine.

Please see your healthcare professional to confirm this result.

Frequent Questions

How does the FIRST RESPONSE Gold™ Digital Pregnancy Test work?

FIRST RESPONSE Gold™ Digital Pregnancy Test detects human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in urine. hCG is the hormone your body produces during pregnancy.

When Can I Take My Digital Pregnancy Test?

The FIRST RESPONSE Gold™ Digital Pregnancy Test is designed to detect hCG as early as 6 days before your missed period (5 days before the day of the expected period). The amount of pregnancy hormone increases as pregnancy progresses. In laboratory testing with early pregnancy urine samples, FIRST RESPONSE™ gave the following results:

NUMBER OF DAYS BEFORE THE EXPECTED PERIOD 5
4
3
2
1
% OF SAMPLES FROM PREGNANT WOMEN GIVING A POSITIVE RESULT
60%
86%
96%
>99% >99%

What do I do if the result on the Display Screen is "YES+" (pregnant)?

A "YES+" test result shows that the pregnancy hormone (hCG) was detected, which normally indicates pregnancy. You must see your doctor to confirm that you are pregnant. If you test positive, but think you may not be pregnant, you should check with your doctor.

What do I do if the result on the Display Screen is "NO-" (not pregnant)?

You may not be pregnant, or it may be too early to tell. If you do not get your period within 7 days, you should retest with another FIRST RESPONSE Gold™ Digital Pregnancy Test. It is possible that you miscalculated the length of your cycle, or your urine may not have had enough pregnancy hormone for the test to register a "YES+" result. If upon retesting, you get another "NO-" result and your period has still not started, you should call your doctor.

The blinking clock has disappeared followed by a "?" on the Display Screen. What does this mean?

A "?" symbol indicates an error has occurred during testing. You should retest with another FIRST RESPONSE Gold™ Digital Pregnancy Test, carefully following all directions.

The Display Screen is blank. What is wrong?

If the display screen goes blank at any time before yielding a result, an error has occurred. You should retest with another FIRST RESPONSE Gold™ Digital Pregnancy Test, carefully following all directions.

How long will my urine pregnancy test result show on the Display Screen?

Your pregnancy test result will be displayed for at least 30 minutes on the digital screen. Read your results within this timeframe. Once you have read your result, discard the stick.

Note: This device contains a battery with a removal feature on the reverse side of the Thumb Grip. Be sure to dispose of the battery according to local regulations.

What will happen if the plastic test holder gets wet?

Some splashing while using the test is expected, but if the test becomes very wet it can become damaged. If damage occurs, the Display Screen will either go blank or an error "?" message will appear.

Do any drugs or medications affect the digital pregnancy test?

Only medications containing the pregnancy hormone (hCG) can affect the result (for example, A.P.L.4, Pregnyl5, Profasi6 and Pergonal6). The urine pregnancy test should not be affected by hormone therapies containing clomiphene citrate (for example Clomid7 and Serophene6); alcohol; antibiotics; or the contraceptive pill.

I removed the device from the wrapper and the clock symbol appeared on the Display Screen, but I'm not ready to use the test. What should I do?

Once removed from the wrapper, the device must be used within 12 hours. Keep the device dry before use.
